Storm Water Management

Each of Us Can Make a Difference

What you can do – Stormwater

  • The Stormwater Utility of Thurston County urges  you to call (360) 867-2099 if you see stormwater problems such as broken or blocked culverts, areas of constant water flows, drainage problems, wetland plants around seeps, and standing water.  The Utility also offers free stormwater reviews and consultations to individual landowners.
  • The Stormwater Utility requests that you refrain from using herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers around drainage ditches because anything you spray in these ditches will end up in the lake.  If used on other parts of your property, please use sparingly.
  • Leaving drainage ditches natural is preferred, however if you feel it necessary to trim ditches please leave 4-5 inches of vegetation, and do not line ditches with rock as it does not filter stormwater.
  • Before the rainy season each year, please inspect any culverts you may have under your driveway or on your property and make sure they are clear so that your property is safe and stormwater is able to move freely through the area.
  • Do not apply fertilizer, herbicide or pesticides along ditches and shorelines. Use them sparingly or preferably not at all on your property.
  • Think about stormwater runoff issues on your property.  Natural vegetation is preferred over groomed lawns for filtering stormwater before it reaches the lake.
